After President Donald Trump’s legal team began its arguments in the Senate impeachment trial on Saturday, Jan. 25, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer held a news conference to rebut the claims and again call for additional witnesses and documents. Schumer said the Trump team had “gaping holes” in its arguments. “The president’s counsel did something they did not intend,” Schumer said. “They made a really compelling case for why the Senate should call witnesses and documents. They kept saying there are no eyewitness accounts, but there are people who have eyewitness accounts.” The House of Representatives impeached Trump in December on two articles of impeachment--abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The Senate trial will determine whether Trump is acquitted of those charges or convicted and removed from office.
