The dreaded ZF6 “rattle” or “sounds like rocks in the transmission” or “shit, it sounds like this thing is coming apart!” … but the car drives and shifts beautifully.
When I got my car in April 2021 I was so alarmed by this sound that I called *the* ZF6 transmission guru - Bill Boudreau www.zfdoc.com and Bill said to me “sometimes that sound goes away when you improve the quality of the idle” or something like that.
Other than the annoying sound the car was running well, and I was super busy so I was kinda just living with it - but a few months later two fuel injectors failed. The car sat for more than a year, until last month when I started doing a LOT to it. It was back on the road, running better but still not perfect and the rattle was still present - tho diminished.
Then I checked the fuel pressure and it was only 20psi. Thru some trouble shooting and parts replacing I got it up to 42psi and now it idles smooth - which also resulted in quieting the ZF Rattle to gone or minimal at most. I didn't think the car was idling poorly - but it was just off enough to cause the rattle.
