(4 Aug 2014) British Royals attended a private reception at Mons town hall with the Belgian prime minister on Monday, as part of ceremonies to commemorate the centenary of World War One.
Prince William, the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry later appeared on the town hall balcony along with Belgian Prime Minister Elio di Rupo where they waved to crowds who had gathered in the square below.
The Battle of Mons was fought on the 23 and 24 August 1914.
It was the first to be fought by the British Army during the conflict.
During the battle the army was pushed back, and the town was occupied by the Germans until 1918.
Germany invaded neutral Belgium on 4 August, 1914, as part of a planned attack on France.
By nightfall, Britain had joined the war.
The war wasn't expected to last long. But instead of weeks, the continent was plunged into hardship and misery for more than four years.
