i24NEWS DESK | World leaders are touching down in Israel this week to mark 75 years since the Red Army liberated Auschwitz, the extermination camp where the Nazis murdered over a million Jews.
Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin and the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and museum are hosting the Fifth World Holocaust Forum in Jerusalem on Thursday.
This year’s event, titled, “Remembering the Holocaust: Fighting anti-Semitism,” is set to be one of the most important events ever organized by Israel, with more than 40 leaders due to land in Tel Aviv before attending Thursday's somber commemoration at Yad Vashem.
Thursday's ceremony will feature speeches by the leaders of the four Allied powers -- US Vice President Mike Pence, Russian President Vladimir Putin of Russia, UK's Prince Charles and French President Emmanuel Macron.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will also speak at the World Holocaust Forum.
Thousands of police officers and other security forces deployed in Jerusalem from Tuesday, ahead of the arrival of dignitaries including Russian President Vladimir Putin, French President Emmanuel Macron and US Vice President Mike Pence.
