May 25, 1969: Sudan’s Government Overthrown In a Military Coup | Firstpost Rewind
On May 25, 1969, a military coup led by Colonel Jaafar Muhammad an-Nimeiry overthrew the government in Sudan. Nimeiri dissolved Parliament and banned all political parties and remained in power in Sudan for over 15 years. He was ousted in 1985 in another military coup led by his own defence minister.
