Russia's newly inaugurated President Vladimir Putin laid a wreath at the Eternal Flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on the eve of Victory Day, in Moscow on Tuesday.
The wreath-laying ceremony took place in Alexander Garden by the Kremlin Wall as a sign of respect to the memory of the heroes of World War II, or the Great Patriotic War as it is known in Russia.
The wreath of fir tree branches was decorated with flowers and ribbon in the colors of the Russian national flag, with the inscription, "To the Unknown Soldier from the Russian President".
This year the Eternal Flame will have been in Alexander Garden for 45 years.
On May 9, Russia marks the 67th anniversary of Soviet victory over the Nazis in World War II.
