As an American soccer fan, I had the incredible experience of attending one of the fiercest rivalries in world football: the Gran Derbi between Sevilla FC and Real Betis. Sevilla, with its rich history of UEFA Europa League trophies, is divided by this passionate rivalry that runs deep through the heart of the city.

I often go to games alone but this time I had the pleasure to attend with Paul Gerald of Groundhopper Soccer Guides. I had Paul as a guest on my Because Football Podcast a few weeks ago and we made plans to go to this HUGE match. Thanks to Paul and the Groundhopper Team for the ticket and sponsoring this video!

My journey began on a misty morning in southern Spain, with a 3-hour bus ride that dropped me back into the sunny streets of Seville. Expecting to be swept up in a sea of green and red, I was surprised to find the old city, packed with tourists, showing little sign of the impending match. I grabbed a coffee at a local Betis peña (fan club) and had a chat with the owner, realizing I was hours early for the pre-match buzz.
I spent the next few hours wandering through the city, searching for the pulse of the derby. It wasn’t until 4 pm, at El Rey de Cervezas, that I felt I’d truly stepped into the rivalry match atmosphere. Fast forward to the unforgettable Sevilla ultras march—complete with police barricades and a fanatical energy.
Stay tuned after the match for footage of the iconic peñas, the pre-match tension, and a look at Sevilla’s stunning tile mosaics. But first, let's dive into the heart of the Gran Derbi—starting with me, running straight into the chaos of one of the most intense football rivalries on earth!
