My first visit to the Spa Valley Railway, saw their Scottish Steam Up event, with two engines visiting the railway from the north of the border, in the form of Caledonian Railway No. 828 and No. 419.
The two locomotives had travelled over 400 miles from their homes of the Strathspey and Bo’ness and Kinnell Railway’s respectively, with two of the Spa Valley resident locomotives running alongside them, in the form of Bulleid Pacific No.34053 Sir Keith Park (which had been dressed up with a blue numberplate and white front end fittings), and Hunslet Austerity No. 2890 Douglas. The station signs at all the stations had also been made blue to suit the Scottish theme.
This was the first time the two Scottish engines had been seen together outside of Scotland, 828's first visit south of the border was in 2011 when she visited the Severn Valley Railway. The visit of these two engines paid particular interest meaning that at long last a visit to the railway was made. The weather throughout the day was rather windy which resulted in some of the shots being a little bit unstable, but thankfully one thing that the guest engines didn’t bring with them was the Scottish rain, and the day mostly saw brilliant sunshine, although some periodic clouds appeared at some of the crucial moments!
