Planting chayote (mirliton) in colder climate is doable but can be challenging. You just have to realise if it's worthwhile to try as chayote requires at least 6 months warm and hot weather before it produces a good harvest. As a Zone 7A gardener I've been successful and have enjoyed some produce every year. My 5 year-old come back chayote plant has done really well with 3 to 4 feet thick leaf mulching. The leaf mulch protects the root system and comes back when the weather is warm and hot in late spring. Correction: In Tennessee the safe time to plant tropical veggies outside is around last week of April (not May). Usually the last frost is around April 21. So it is safe to plant sprouted chayote around last week of April.
This year I planted 4 mature chayote seeds (from my chayote harvest) in grocery bags to give them a good head-start. I planted them around last week of December 2020. I showed in this video how they look like after 3 months indoor. Check out these videos related to my chayote planting. [ Ссылка ] and [ Ссылка ]
