Here is a specimen of fluorite, black tourmaline (schorl), and mica, collected from the Erongo Mountains in Namibia. The fluorite fluoresces a white-purple color under UV lighting.
Fluorite occurs commonly in cubic, octahedral and dodecahedral crystals in many different colors. These colors range from colorless and completely transparent to yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, or black. Purples and greens tend to be the most common colors seen.
Schorl, or black tourmaline, is the most common form of tourmaline and has been used for everything from jewelry to piezoelectric guitar pickups.
