Valino's Log:
As long as I knew about B-Boy culture I always wanted to Learn how to dance. I never did because the crew I hung out with was more into causing trouble. That's beside the fact. This clip is significant to me in a number of ways. First and foremost this was taken @ the 1999 416 Graf Expo in Toronto. This was like Christmas in September for me. The one time of year where I could get a full days worth of local hip hop culture. I'll put it into perspective. Me, a broke suburban kid with strict parents starving for new music and cultures. Going downtown was always a special event because at the time I was so broke I couldn't even put TTC fare together. 416 Graf Expo shaped the way I looked at Toronto Youth Culture and showcased what a colourful scene we had. Shout out to Jonathan Ramos and Team for putting the unique event together. This event was also the catalyst to future events such as Style in Progress and the Manifesto Festival. Second reason, I met B-Boy Dyzee in highschool in Scarborough before he had even found dance. I remember drawing together in Art Class. I think around the same time he had discovered dance I found my love of Filmmaking. Watching him take his Art form to a global stage and becoming a world champion was very inspirational to me. Dyzee always attributed his love for dance as the motivation for keeping him out of trouble, I felt the same for making movies. Lastly, this event was a training grounds for me as a cinematographer because I couldn`t get into these shows or concerts with my camera and this was fully accessable to the public. My formative Guerella Filmmaking years when I just had got my first camera. At the time I had shot a couple short films but I was just realizing the power of documenting events and life in general. This was shot on a sony Hi-8 camera which took me 8 months to save up for. This clip says it all for me 12 years later I`m doing the same thing documenting moments in time. I love what I do.
Stay tuned for more 416 footage...
