Charged with being counterrevolutionaries and religious fanatics, Mother Thérèse tried to take responsibility to save the sisters, but all 16 were sentenced to death. In a horrifying month from arrest to execution, on the evening of July 17, 1794, the sisters were taken to the guillotine in an open cart. Despite insults and thrown objects from the crowd, the sisters remained brave, singing hymns and chanting evening prayers. The execution marked a tragic end for these women, beatified as martyrs in 1906, known as the Martyrs of Compiègne.
