These step-by-step instructions detail how to remove and replace the cabin air filter on a 2011 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited, and are similar to procedure for 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 models. The procedures will be similar for select Subaru Forester 2.5-liter models between 2003 and 2014. Improve airflow and A/C performance with a new cabin air filter, which removes contaminants from the outside air before they enter your vehicle’s cabin. Your 2010 to 2014 Subaru Outback’s owner’s manual includes the recommended replacement interval, but if your cabin air filter is dirty or clogged, or if you drive in heavily polluted or dusty environments, you can also change the cabin air filter more regularly for improved cabin airflow, air quality, and overall comfort.

Your cabin air filter is behind your glove box, so start by emptying your glove box.
On the outside of the compartment toward the passenger door, slip the dampener off its post.
Press in on both sides of the glove box to release it from its stops… and lower it.
Behind where the glove box was, on the filter cover, you’ll see tabs on the right and left that you’ll squeeze to detach each side to remove it.
Slide the old filter out of the housing.
Clean any debris from inside the housing before installing your new cabin air filter.
Install the new filter with the airflow arrow pointing downward.
Reinstall the cover, making sure it snaps into place on both sides.
Raise the glove box until it reengages with the stops on both sides.
Reattach the dampener on the outside of the compartment.
Replace any items you took out of your glove box… and close it.
