A new road designed to ease traffic congestion in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa opened to the public on August 15, 2022. Built by a Chinese company, the roadway is the latest in a series of infrastructure projects backed by China across Africa. The Alexander Pushkin Square-Gotera Interchange Road spans 3.8km (2.4 miles). It has a 320-metre (1,050ft) tunnel and a dedicated lane for buses. Traffic congestion is a major problem in the city that is home to at least 5 million people.
