From May to April: the story of South African slavery
Tragically, the history of South African slavery has been all but forgotten.
Few know that, upon landing at the Cape of Good Hope, slaves were stripped of everything — even their names.
As property, many were renamed after the calendar month in which they arrived.
Created in partnership with the Iziko Slave Lodge Museum in Cape Town, the Slave Calendar holds the portraiture and true stories of hope as told by the living descendants of those who had their first-ever possession taken from them: their names.
The calendar begins in May in celebration of May 8th, 1996,
the day South Africa officially adopted a new constitution
and — finally — freed us all.
