LifeSciences BC and Genome BC Announce the Launch of National Biotechnology Week in British Columbia:
LifeSciences British Columbia and Genome British Columbia are pleased to be the official provincial launch partners for the annual National Biotechnology Week which kicks off this week, running from September 17th to 24th.
National Biotechnology Week is an annual celebration that takes place across Canada and celebrates the imagination and innovation of Canadian scientists and entrepreneurs. Spanning every region of the country, over 4000 participants will take part in educational events, meet leading Canadian biotech companies, and see how biotechnology is vital to the economy and future of society. LifeSciences BC is proud to lead BC's participation in the program annually.
This year, provincial associations across Canada are partnering with their respective Genome Centres for a series of launch events across the country. This new national partnership with Canada's network of Genome Centres celebrates the 10th anniversary of the draft human genome sequence and the important links between genomics, biotech and the broader economy. In British Columbia, LifeSciences BC and Genome BC will co-host the official launch of National Biotech Week on Thursday, September 16, 2010 in conjunction with the launch of the sanofi-aventis BioTalent Challenge -- an annual program, aimed at bringing high-school students together with local research and industry leaders.
The day-long event targets students in grades nine through twelve and will include a screening of the winning video of the inaugural Gene Screen BC competition (a joint initiative by Genome BC and the BC Clinical Genetics Network) followed by a lecture on biomarkers as an application of genomics by Norma Biln, President and CEO of Augurex Life Sciences Corp. and Board Member of BioTalent Canada. Students will later participate in lab tours and interactive activities at the BC Cancer Agency's Research Centre, including its Terry Fox Laboratory and the Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre.
Don Enns, President of LifeSciences BC and Director of Genome BC commented, "LifeSciences BC and Genome BC are pleased to come together for this year's launch which will celebrate and promote science education. Supporting these types of educational opportunities is core to the activities of both LSBC and Genome BC, and critical to ensuring we have the talent to continue growing the knowledge-based bio-economy for generations to come, here in BC and across Canada."
"Engaging students in innovative and hands-on education programs such as the BioTalent Challenge and Gene Screen BC helps students understand the significance of the science in a way that is accessible and exciting," says Dr. Alan Winter, President and Chief Executive Officer of Genome BC. "The impact and application of genomics and all life sciences in this century will be profound and far-reaching and we believe it is important that as a society we understand it."
All interested parties are invited to attend the National Biotech Week Launch on Sept. 16th, and all events occurring over the course of the week. For a full calendar of local National Biotech Week events and registration information, please visit LifeSciences BC at www.lifesciencesbc.ca
