Cephalon (noun, singular), cephala (noun, plural) and cephalic (adjective) are all derived from the Sanskrit word for skull, कपालः, pronounced kapalah via the Greek word kephalē, which means "head.” The Malay word kepala also has the same Sanskrit roots. The Sanskrit word for head is शिरः (shirah) and the Tamil word is தலை (talai). The Malay word tengkorak (skull) translates to the Sanskrit word for skull, कपालः (kaoalay).
