This model is called a 'Speed King' and was designed by Walt Musicano in the USA in the late 1940's This particular model was built in UK in the late 1950's or early 1960's UK by the late Johnny Hall. a well respected and successful C/L flyer. For many years this model was flown by Mr Ian Russell, the man behind the successful line of 'Rustler' model aircraft and tether car engines and part of the old UK producer of Merco engines.
The model had been flown to the point that it was in danger of disintegration due to various mishaps, vintage construction methods. age and oil/fuel ingress. In 2022-23 the model was completely stripped, de-oiled, repaired with thin glasssfibre/epoxy skinning to replace original silk and cellulose and re-painted using 2-pack epoxy in its original paint scheme with reproduced sign-writing on the wing.
Model takes off on a detachable take-up dolly. Engine is a 1940's McCoy .49. Propeller is original vintage wooden 9 x 10" pitch.
Pit man is Jan Huning and pilot and model restorer is Peter Fox. Flight on this early re-test flight was about 100mph using 60 foot steel lines. It will fly quite a lot faster with the engine setting leaned a little and modern propeller.
