Members of Israel's ultra-Orthodox community clashed with police during a protest against the draft order near Tel Aviv. In June, the Supreme Court ruled that the Defence Ministry could no longer grant blanket exemptions to Jewish seminary students from compulsory military service. This arrangement, which has been in place since the founding of Israel in 1948, was originally implemented when the ultra-Orthodox, or Haredi, population was small.
