Myself and my mate Ben from Londoner Outdoors went for a 3.75 mile walk around the Devil's Punchbowl (a huge dry valley) in Hindhead, Surrey and our main aim was to wild camp on top of Gibbet Hill there. The hill 272 metres above sea level and boasts commanding views of the surrounding area.
The hill was the site of a grisly execution in the late 18th century when 3 men were hung and coated in tar and strung up in gibbets and left to rot as a grisly warning to other would be criminals. Their crime: the brutal murder of an unknown sailor just a few hundred yards away on the old London to Portsmouth road!
