✔️Anembryonic pregnancy (blighted ovum) is a nonviable pregnancy that occurs when a fertilized egg implants and a gestational (embryonic) sac forms and grows, but the yolk sac and embryo fail to develop.
➡️This terminology includes pregnancies in which an embryo may have been present but has since been resorbed.
➡️Anembryonic pregnancy contrasts with "embryonic or fetal demise" in which an embryo or fetus is visualized but cardiac activity is not present.
✔️A blighted ovum is the single leading cause of early pregnancy loss.
➡️Estimated to cause half of all first trimester miscarriages.
