For many people in Hillah, Iraq, Wednesday is a day of mourning. Two suicide bombers blew themselves up on Tuesday in the middle of a line of pilgrims waiting at a checkpoint.
So Wednesday, mourners carried coffins through the Holy city of Najaf for burial.

Many of the dead are still waiting to be claimed outside the hospital in Hillah.

Inside, the wounded fill the hallways.

Police said after the bombings, gunmen moved in and opened fire on the crowd. Ammunition still litters the street.

The violence is blamed on Sunni insurgents bent on destabilizing the Shiite-dominated government and pushing the country toward civil war.
