One of the biggest questions for anyone who owns a motorhome or campervan is how to protect it from theft, especially while it's at home and not being used.
And this time of year is even worse; the numbers for vehicle thefts, including vans, skyrocket. It makes me so mad that this needs to be a conversation we have, but sadly this is the world we live in.
Of course, nothing is 100% guaranteed, especially when battling professional thieves, but there ARE things you can do to protect your van, whether you store it at home, on the street or anywhere else where thieves could access it.
We've put together a guide on ways to protect your van and your belongings, plus tools and gear recommended to us or used by us.

There are two main types of theft:
- entire vehicle theft (where the vehicle is stolen and often broken down for parts) and
- break-ins, where thieves are more interested in your contents, instead of taking the vehicle itself.
It probably doesn't come as much of a surprise that whole vehicle thefts are generally carried out by experienced (ie: professional) thieves, whilst break-ins are, broadly speaking, mostly opportunistic or less experienced thieves.
Empty your van completely whilst not using it.- One of the biggest tips is to make sure you don't leave anything of value in the van whilst it's just sitting there. The less there is to steal, the better.
Put up CCTV stickers in the windows (even if it's not true!)- These are (apparently) fairly effective at deterring thieves, especially the less-confident ones. Put them all over the place so it's obvious should anyone come for your windows.
Don't put your xmas presents in your van (or in the boot of your car...!)- We've all done it. It's the perfect hiding place. BUT it makes any break-in or vehicle theft so much more traumatic. Unless you're living in your van, don't store things in there you're not prepared to lose.
Use extra devices- Steering locks, pedal locks, wheel clamps, driveway bars- you might not want to travel with these all the time, but if you motorhome/ camper is going to be stationary for a while, it's worth investing in a few deterrents to make things for difficult.
As one police officer told me, "You're not going to stop them trying. The aim is to get them to leave your vehicle alone and move on to easier targets."
