Tesla has offered an acceleration boost for both he Tesla Model 3 and Model Y for quite some time now. The Acceleration boost is limited to the Long Range version of the Model Y and Model 3.
This acceleration boost is meant to improve your 0-60 time by 0.5 seconds, and when you consider the base horse power of the Model Y and Model 3, this is a significant improvement. This power increase comes in at $2,000 and only requires that you select the upgrade on the Tesla App and submit the order. Once done, Tesla will automatically push a software update to your car.
2 years ago I purchased the acceleration boost for our original Tesla Model Y. This time, I am putting the Tesla Model 3 to the test. The Model 3 comes with a base 0-60 time of 4.2 seconds, which is significant acceleration to start with. The acceleration boost is promised to improve this time to 3.7 seconds. The real question is, how much does it improve in real life and is it worth it?
In my testing, I charged the Model 3 to 100% charge and completed testing both with and without the acceleration boost between 90-100% charge. In addition, testing was completed on both within 1 hour total time, with the same conditions.
Interestingly in my baseline testing of the LR Model 3, I ended up getting an average 0-60 time of 4.095 seconds, which is a whole 0.105 seconds faster than stated. So the start point is already faster than advertised, which now means this is a test of how much faster than stock and is it faster than 3.7 sec.
After the boost was installed, my average 0-60 time ended up being 3.68, or just under the stated 3.7 seconds. This was a great improvement and delivers on the promised 3.7 seconds, but it is also nearly 0.1 sec less improvement than anticipated. Because the Model 3 LR comes slightly faster than advertised, the baseline is better than what the software states. This means if the acceleration boost was indeed targeted to achieve 3.7 sec, then the target is time, not reduction in time.
At the end of the day, the last question is, is it worth it? After completing this testing, I think that you get a lot of value for $2k. To improve 0-60 by 0.4 sec at this baseline can be quite expensive. So the cost for the performance is reasonable. The feeling in the car is also as you would expect and delivers more G's on takeoff. If you are one who prefers to accelerate as fast as you can from time to time, this upgrade may be for you. If you dont much use the acceleration the Model 3 already comes with, then this wouldn't be for you.
