The UK film industry is a complex beast, and understanding how the industry works can feel pretty overwhelming for people new to the industry. At the same time, once you understand how all the parts fit together, it’s an incredibly rewarding industry to work in.
This BFI Film Academy Lab was all about helping you better understand the complexities of the UK film industry. Workshop leader Helen Johnson, founder of film & TV training provider Talking Point, broke down how the screen industry is structured, how it operates, and what you need to know before starting your career in film.
This session looked at the size and scope of the industry, as well as pinpointing the differences between studio and independent productions, how the industry has responded to COVID-19, and the steps that are being taken to ensure future film productions are safe and inclusive.
The BFI Film Academy team also gave a quick overview of the opportunities we offer for young, aspiring filmmakers aged between 16 and 25.
This event was part of the Business of Film strand of BFI Film Academy Labs 2021/22.
