2013 was the 40th Anniversary of the opening of the NYMR on 1st May 1973 by the Duchess of Kent. The spring gala was held over a 10 day period in May and featured recently overhauled L.H & J.C. No. 29 which hauled the original train along with K1 No. 62005 40 years ago on the official opening day. B1 No. 61306 ‘Mayflower’ was the visiting engine, paying its first visit to the NYMR. Resident B1 No. 61264 was renamed and renumbered to No. 61002 ‘Impala’, to recreate the last B1 to run over the former Whitby to Malton line in BR days in 1965. The gala saw several double headers, freight trains, photo charters and mainline running on the Esk Valley Branch. J72 No. 69023 ‘Joem’ hauled the saloon which was used in the filming of the Railway Children.
