These are 2 of my favourite traditional Chinese steamed sweet treats growing up as a child. Mom usually made these on special occasions, i.e., Chinese New Year 🧧 I looked forward to having these every Chinese New Year! We hope you like them as much as we do.
The first one, steamed rising rice cake, goes by many different names but we call it Fa-Gao 發糕. Fa Gao translated from Chinese means both the "cake that has expanded" or "prosperity cake". The Chinese believes that when these cakes blossom, it looks like a smile which will bring good luck and prosperity for the rest of the year. These cakes are sweet, light and fluffy. Another name it goes by is fortune cake.
The second one is the Steamed Rice Cup Cake with Red Beans (缽仔糕) aka But Chai Ko. The texture is completely different from the Fa Gao but the ingredients and process is very similar.
Steamed Rice Cup Cake with Red Beans is a famous street food in Hong Kong. Its chewy texture with flavours of sugar and beans are very attractive to those people who are fond of steamed desserts. It's worth trying this classic Chinese snack if you haven't had a chance before.
In Cantonese, they are called 缽仔糕, (Bok Jai Go, literally means cakes in small bowls). So they might be translated into "bowl cake" or "bowl pudding" The Chinese character of "糕" sounds like "go" that means "pudding" or "prosperity".
