I once held in my hand a bulbil from an edible form of Dioscorea bulbifera, better known as the "air potato." This is a yam that makes roots right on the vine instead of in the ground, making it a valuable root crop as the harvest is much easier than digging up roots. In Florida, the air potato is classed as a non-native invasive species and the wild, poisonous forms are all over the place in the woods, leading to many eradication attempts. The cultivated and non-toxic forms, unfortunately, are very rare. I had two different farmers give me bulbils from two different cultivars this last week - today I'm planting them and we'll see how edible Dioscorea bulbifera really is, and if we can grow it in the garden!
