A general overview of the Book of 2 Kings is that it continues where 1st Kings left off in describing the history of the two Israelite kingdoms. The book may be divided into two parts:
1) The story of the two kingdoms from the middle of the 9th century B.C. on through the fall of the capital city of Samaria and the end of the northern kingdom of Israel in 721 B.C.
2) The story of the southern kingdom of Judah is described from the fall of the northern kingdom of Israel down to the capture and destruction of the capital city of Jerusalem in Judah by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia in 586 B.C.
The book ends with an account of the Gedaliah as governor of the southern kingdom of Judah under the Babylonians, and a report of the release of King Jehoiachin of Judah from prison in Babylon.
These national disasters took place because of the unfaithfulness and sinfulness of the kings and people of both Israel and Judah. The destruction of Jerusalem and the exile of many of the people of Judah was one of the great turning points in ancient Israelite history. In addition, the prophet Elisha, the successor and protégé to the prophet Elijah, stands out prominently in this book.
