'Sylvester the lion' as he has been nicknamed by locals, escaped through a hole in the fence in Karoo National Park on 29 March 2016, after heavy rains in the area. The lion was darted from the air in difficult terrain high up in the mountains and was transported in a stretcher, on foot, for 3 km to the nearest awaiting vehicle.
The lion is back in the park’s boma and doing well.
SANParks would like to reassure the public that any decision to be taken by the management of SANParks on the lion will be in line with relevant practices, policies and legislation. After his last escape he spent more than five months in the same holding boma before he was deemed ready to be released into the 93 000 hectare park itself.
