PRP is obtained by collecting a sample of blood from the patient. The blood is then processed through centrifugation; utilizing a specialized processing system that spins at a specific rate of RPM for a specific amount of time. The centrifugal force of spinning separates the red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma.

After processing, the PRP sample should provide a therapeutic dose of platelets; which is between 3-7 times the concentration of whole blood. PRP should also have a significantly reduced or an absence of red blood cells and neutrophils which are known to degrade collagen and other extracellular molecules of the skin.

When PRP is injected, new blood vessels form and fibroblasts migrate, proliferate, and begin to remodel skin tissue. Hyaluronic acid, elastin, collagen, and other components of the extracellular matrix are produced and help aid in the inflammatory process. Resident stem cells are also attracted to the area and help regenerate skin tissue; resulting in healthy new layers of skin.
