The price of petrol and diesel at the pumps is going up all the time.
Conservative-led governments since 2010 have been right to freeze fuel duty, but fuel prices still remain disproportionally high due to the way that tax is structured.
Global factors—including the pandemic years and the Russian invasion of Ukraine—have seriously affected wholesale fuel prices, but no single Western government can resolve that worldwide problem.
The Government could, however, go further than freezing fuel duty, and make a serious cut to it instead—to help motorists getting to work, taking the kids to school, or working in businesses.
A cut would have a particularly positive impact on struggling road haulage firms, and the bus and coach sector.
This morning I called on the Leader of the House of Commons for an urgent debate—ahead of the Chancellor's Spring Statement next week—so that all MPs can put these high fuel prices in the political spotlight when their constituents are already feeling the pinch, and encourage the Chancellor to act boldly and decisively.
It's simple: a reduction in fuel tax is a reduction in financial pressure on working families in Bucks, and increases the amount of their cash available to drive the recovery of our local and national economies.
That's got to be better than just filling the Treasury coffers.
