The Consolidated B-24 Liberator was one of the first heavy bombers employed by the Allies during World War 2. It fought alongside the iconic Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress across all continents and was used for many different roles, including as a submarine hunter and maritime patrol aircraft.
And despite constantly being overshadowed by the Flying Fortress, the B-24 Liberator flew faster, higher, and farther.
In addition, the gigantic aircraft bomber that resembled a seaplane and was known as the Flying Boxcar, was equipped with over a dozen .50-caliber machine guns and had the capacity for a sizeable bombload, which the B-17 lacked.
Of the 18,000 models produced during the war, around 13,000 were used by the United States Army Air Forces, making the Liberator the ultimate symbol of American industrial might.
And it remains the most produced bomber in military history.
