Love the look of succulent terrariums? Learn how to make your own with a few simple steps! Landscape and garden expert Sara Bendrick shows you how to create the perfect terrarium using a few things from Wayfair and a garden supply store. It’s a really easy project and can save you a ton of money instead of buying one in a store. Let’s do this! So first you’ll need to choose a vessel, and pretty much any glass container will do. An open container is best for succulents, cacti, and tillandsia because they love dry soil. Closed containers work better for moisture loving plants like mosses, ferns, ivy, baby’s tears, and bromeliads.
Here’s what else you’ll need to get started:
• Glass vase or jar
• Sand
• Rocks
• Gravel
• Activated charcoal
• Potting soil
• Plants
• Shovels or spoons
• Water
• Figurines (optional but very fun!)
You will create layers that will drain water from the plants. Succulents and cacti are from the desert, so they don’t need a lot of water. Working bottom to top, start with a layer of sand. Enough to cover the bottom of the container works. Next, add a layer of rocks followed by smaller pebbles. The small stones and sand will fit between the larger rocks and all of these materials will allow the water to drain. The next element is activated charcoal. This stuff keeps the water super fresh and stops mold from growing. Top that layer off with potting soil. Pack the soil down to make sure there aren’t air pockets. Then, add one more layer of rocks. Remember, we don’t want the succulents to sit on wet soil. Carefully remove the succulents from their containers and break up the soil and roots a little. Do you know what a healthy succulent plant looks like? Healthy, plump leaves are key—avoid plants with scars or brown, wilted leaves. Be sure to allow enough room between each plant as they will grow and we don’t want to overcrowd them. Just for fun, add a mini figurine to finish the terrarium or a chalkboard cheese marker with a sweet note. Sara is often asked, “How often do you water succulents?” She shares that you should only water when the soil looks dry. Depending on your climate and plants, she’d say weekly or every other week should work. An easy test is to put a finger in the soil. If it’s very dry, you should water. If you notice that the soil is wet and soggy or can see a lot of water in the bottom of the jar, you are watering too much. If the leaves are dry or wrinkly, water them more.
