Maserati has unveiled a convertible version of its MC20 supercar, named the MC20 Cielo. Unlike traditional convertibles, the Cielo doesn't feature a canvas or metal folding roof. Instead, it boasts a unique glass roof that allows light to penetrate even when fully closed. This glass roof, developed in collaboration with convertible consultants Webasto, can be made opaque with the touch of a button using Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) technology. Despite the addition of the glass roof and necessary body strengthening panels, the convertible only weighs 65kg more than the MC20 coupé. Aerodynamically, the design ensures that airflow into the cabin remains smooth, preventing any disturbances to the occupants.
The MC20 Cielo is not just about its roof; it also offers exclusivity with its PrimaSerie Launch Edition. Only 60 of these special editions will be available, featuring a bright new Acquamarina paint option and gold-colored 20-inch wheels. The interior of these editions will be adorned with 'ice-colored' upholstery, though more subdued color options are available for those seeking a less flashy appearance.
In terms of performance, the MC20 Cielo doesn't disappoint. It retains the hard-top MC20's carbon-fiber chassis and its powerful twin-turbocharged V6 engine. This engine delivers a whopping 621bhp and 538lb ft of torque, allowing the car to sprint from 0-62mph in just 3.0 seconds. Its top speed exceeds 200mph, making it a true performance powerhouse.
Inside, Maserati has made sure the MC20 Cielo is as modern as it is fast. The car features two 10-inch digital screens, one for instruments and another for infotainment. For those who find the engine's roar not entertaining enough, there's an optional Sonus stereo system. Additionally, the car comes with a built-in Maserati digital assistant, and buyers have the option to integrate Amazon Alexa voice control.
Maserati's commitment to innovation doesn't stop at the MC20 Cielo. The brand has pledged to go fully electric by 2030. As part of this commitment, Maserati will introduce five new pure-electric models in the coming years, all badged as ‘Folgore’, which translates to ‘Lightning’ in Italian. Unlike other brands in the Stellantis group that will share common electric platforms, Maserati's electric vehicles will have a bespoke design.
The electric journey for Maserati begins with the upcoming battery-electric replacement for the GranTurismo coupé. Rumors suggest that this new electric vehicle will boast an impressive power output of 1,200bhp. With such ambitious plans and innovative designs like the MC20 Cielo, Maserati is clearly positioning itself as a leader in the luxury performance car segment.
