It’s cherry season in Japan and that means — a choice! Japanese Cherries or American Cherries. What’s exactly the difference?
Japanese Cherry (Sato Nishiki - Yamanashi) 590 yen for 100g ($6 for the small pack)
American (Rainier cherry) from Washington State 1080 yen for 430g ($10 for the large pack)
Yamagata produces 70% of Japan's cherries. The cherry was introduced by a German trader Richard Gaertner during the Meiji Period. Yamagata was decided as the ideal place from cultivation because it has little frost and fewer typhoons.
