The 1,300-year-old Potala Palace in Lhasa, capital of southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, has completed its annual tradition of painting the buildings. The repainting started 10 days ahead of usual time due to low temperatures. Traditional formula to whitewash the building is a compound of milk, honey, sugar and lime, which is scented with a distinctive sweet smell. It is crucial to keep such an annual routine to protect buildings in Tibet against extreme weather conditions.
