...Source: [ Ссылка ] Transcript: According to Not A Tesla App, Michelin is in talks with Tesla to test its airless tire technology, Uptis. Discussions occurred as recently as April 2024, says Michelin CEO Florent Megenaux. Uptis aims to eliminate flat tires and blowouts in passenger vehicles.
The tires are designed to be puncture-proof, potentially saving 200 million tires from early retirement due to punctures or improper air pressure. Michelin has already partnered with General Motors, testing Uptis on Chevrolet Bolt EVs since 2021. They plan to make Uptis commercially available by the end of 2024.
Uptis tires could last up to three times longer than standard tires, reducing waste and emissions. They have performed well at speeds up to 130 mph, suitable for high-speed applications like police vehicles. The tires are lighter and more aerodynamically efficient, potentially improving vehicle efficiency.
Michelin is also developing a method to retread Uptis tires using 3D printing, extending their usability. The tires are expected to be priced comparably to run-flat tires, making them an economically viable option. Michelin and GM are working with regulators to get government approvals, aiming to introduce Uptis on passenger models by 2024.
