In the middle of the Mauritanian desert, Mbera is the biggest refugee camp for Malians in the region. Around 60 000 people here fled the conflict that gripped the north of Mali in 2012. For the past two years, their survival has been assured by the work of humanitarian organisations, some with financial support from the European Commission. The continuation of this aid, in the face of numerous other crises in Africa and elsewhere, is not a given.
