Lancaster County has a rich history of covered bridges, with many dating back to the early to mid-1800’s. At one time there were well over 100 covered bridges all throughout the county. Today that number is just 28. Many of the covered bridges reflect the sturdy arched truss design, made of white oak and include oak planks for the decks. Most of the bridges are painted red on the outside and white at the entrances and exits.
We will discover four covered bridges in this week’s Aerial PA. The Erb’s Covered Bridge was built in 1849 across Hammer Creek. It’s 70 feet long and 15 feet wide.
Our next covered bridge is the Hunsecker’s Mill Covered Bridge. It was built in 1843 across the Conestoga River. The bridge is 180 feet in length, making it the longest single span covered bridge in Lancaster County.
Not too far from Park City Center sits the Landis Mill Covered Bridge. It was built in 1873, and at 53 feet long, it’s the shortest covered bridge in the county.
Lastly, we visit Shearer’s Covered Bridge that spans Big Chiques Creek. This double Burr arch trusses design was built in 1847 and is 89 feet long.
