Follow along with Molly Peach Mayhew, Islands Education Manager, to learn about fish migration and in particular striped bass. This lesson is designed for high school students (Grades 9-12).
Answers to questions asked in lesson:
1. Q: Which type of fish migration is spawning/reproducing in freshwater with life spent at sea? Choose one: anadromy, catadromy, amphidromy. A: Anadromy
2. Q: List an example of a catadromous species. A: Eels
3. Q: What is one example of an external, or exogenous, trigger for fish migration? A: Fish density, food abundance, water flows, temperature, photoperiod
4. Q: Why do fish migrate? A: Fish migrate due to internal and external triggers. Migrations are usually triggered by seasonal changes in environmental conditions and by internal physiological processes.
5. Q: Why do striped bass migrate? A: Temperature changes and food abundance (studied in this lesson)
6. Q: How do you think climate change (i.e. change in water temperature) will affect striped bass migration? A: With an increase in water temperature, striped bass may migrate at different times of year and migrate further northward to cooler water temperatures. This will affect the entire food chain.
