El Muro/The Wall is a modern dance by the National Portrait Gallery's choreographer in residence, Dana Tai Soon Burgess. It is inspired by the painting Refugees Crossing the Border Wall into South Texas by Rigoberto A. Gonzalez A. Gonzalez which is part of The Outwin 2022: American Portraiture Today exhibition. Portraying a journey to secure a new home in America, El Muro/The Wall investigates the challenges of asylum seekers and immigration at the US Southern border. Thirty minutes in length, the work features eleven professional modern dancers from the critically acclaimed Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company with live music from five musicians led by Peruvian American percussionist, Martin Zarzar formerly of Pink Martini.
