Biology Dictionary: Defining the term Analogous

Biology Definition: - Analogous | Features / structures that are superficially similar and have evolved independently, (in unrelated organisms) and serve the same function.

Convergent evolution describes the development of analogous structures, whereby unrelated organisms evolved separately, yet their environments are comparable, thus resulting in similar structures / features evolving to solve similar evolutionary problems. e.g. the wings of butterflies, birds and bats all serve the same function, i.e. flight. Thus, wings of those organisms are analogous structures.

Learning Biology is a whole lot easier when you know the definitions of commonly used words. In fact a good command of biological terminology can mean the difference between a poor grade and an excellent one! (Since of course you get marks awarded for using the correct technical language in the right context when answering exam questions).
