Ali, Welfare Officer at the National Union of Students speaks about the struggle of students he helps and their fears should JobSeeker and Youth Allowance be cut and returned to the old brutal rates.
“No one can survive on $40 a day on JobSeeker or $32.50 a day on Youth Allowance. When you factor into account the exhorbitant rents that people have to pay, the rising cost of living, rising cost of utilities it's just simply not enough. The purpose of the welfare system is meant to be to support those during that time of need. It's meant to be to support the next generation through Youth Allowance who are trying to build a better future for themselves through education who will be contributing to our economy to our society and they just want to succeed in their studies.”
With the supplement now cut, it will mean that many students will experience severe hardship that will further negatively impact their studies and ability to contribute to the community.
Now, more than ever we need a permanent, adequate raise to JobSeeker and Youth Allowance and other payments so that people can put food on the table and keep a roof over their head.
