The death toll from Sunday’s suicide bombing at a gathering in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Bajaur district has risen to 46.
As the dust settles, The counter terrorism department has registered an FIR against unknown suspects on charges of terrorism, murder, attempted murder, and other offences.
A senior police official confirmed to Dawn that the Islamic State Khorasan group is suspected to be involved in the attack.
Reports had previously hinted at the presence of ISKP in the remote Bajaur district, which shares a border with Afghanistan.
Terrorist activities have escalated across Pakistan in recent months, with the banned TTP intensifying attacks, particularly targeting police in KP and areas bordering Afghanistan. Insurgents in Balochistan have also joined forces with the outlawed TTP.
A recent report by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies revealed that terror and suicide attacks have claimed 389 lives in the first half of this year alone.
The situation remains dire, with attacks predominantly focused on regions bordering Afghanistan.
Recently, Pakistan’s armed forces expressed “serious concerns on the safe havens and liberty of action available to” the banned TTP in Afghanistan.
A UN committee monitoring global terrorist activities then endorsed Pakistan's complaint about the TTP's increased influence in Afghanistan since the Taliban's takeover.
It’s report said TTP fighters are using training camps in Afghanistan's Kunar province, aiming to re-establish control of territory in Pakistan after reunification with splinter groups and emboldening by the Taliban's rule in Afghanistan.
UN committee report said some elements of the TTP were relocated away from the Pak Afghan border area under pressure from the government of Pakistan.
However, concerns persist that the outlawed group may become a regional threat if it continues to operate from safe bases in Afghanistan.
