Over 5.5 million people have fled the violence in Syria since 2011, seeking safety in Turkey, Jordan Lebanon and many other countries around the world. Millions are displaced and have become refugees within Syria.
In most of these cases, there is no hope in sight and each passing day is bringing more hunger and starvation. As Muslims living in peace and prosperity, it is our duty to help and take care of our Syrian brothers and sisters in need.
How did the Syrian Crisis start?
In March 2011, a small group of pro-democracy demonstrators took to the streets and started protests against the government. This was all inspired by Arab spring - an uprising movement against governments across middle east.
Instead of calming downing the situation, Syrian government used deadly force to crush the dissent and the protests. This forced the protestors to pick up the arms themselves and it all started a civil war.
Rest is all history.
Syrian Civil War in Numbers
Since 2011, over half of Syria’s population has been forced to flee their homes in search of safety. That is over 12+ million people living in refugee camps in and out of Syria without access life necessities. Families still living in Syria are struggling to survive and meet their basic needs: 13.4 million people need humanitarian assistance, including 6.7 million who are internally displaced.
Human cost of Syrian War
• It is estimated that about 400,000 civilians have lost their lives due to the war in Syria.
• About 12,000 of the casualties in Syria were children.
• About 6.2 million people have been internally displaced in Syria since the start of the conflict in 2011.
• Nearly 11.1 million people in Syria need humanitarian assistance and about half of the people affected by the Syrian refugee crisis are children.
• A lot of healthcare centres and hospitals, schools and water and sanitation systems have been damaged or destroyed so disease can spread very quickly.
• More than 80% of Syrians live in extreme poverty, on less than £1.36 a day.
• There are about 5.6 million number of registered Syrian refugees.
