Historic Moment at Crawford Art Gallery! 🚨
For the first time in 140 years, our iconic Canova casts have left the building! 🙌 This week, a delicate process of crating and moving 25 stunning plaster and marble works concluded.
🌟 These masterpieces, including Laocoon and His Sons, The Bathing Venus, and the Belvedere Torso, were originally cast from Vatican sculptures by Italian artist Antonio Canova in 1818 and gifted to Cork. Loved by over 250,000 visitors annually, they now make way for the ambitious Transforming Crawford Art Gallery project.
Each sculpture, weighing from 75kg up to 2 tonnes, was meticulously packed into bespoke crates with help from London conservators Taylor Pearce Ltd. Over 3,500 artworks are being safely stored as part of this transformative journey.
📦 While we say a temporary goodbye to the Canova casts, we’re thrilled for the future of the Gallery and can’t wait to welcome everyone to the reimagined space!
