STORYLINE
Residents of the United States capital and nearby states were buried on Saturday from a likely record-setting blizzard that US President Barack Obama jokingly dubbed "Snowmageddon."
Thigh-high mounds of snow were blanketing the capital.
Washington''s familiar sites and monuments were covered with nearly two feet (60 centimetres) of snow.
Officials urged residents to stay home so that roads might be cleared in time for everyone to return to work on Monday.
But despite the onslaught, some ventured outside for a chance to play, taking part in a huge snowball fight at DuPont Circle, a major Washington thoroughfare.
Hundreds of people gathered, with word spreading through the social networking Web sites Facebook and Twitter.
