This webinar titled Catalyzing Land Sovereignty and Tenure for Indigenous Communities and Farmers of Color highlights current initiatives for transferring land ownership and access to Indigenous communities and farmers of color.
Access to land that is secure, affordable, and equitable is a critical aspect of fostering just and sustainable food and farming systems. Following on the previous webinar, which unpacked how present-day disparities in farmland ownership are rooted in colonization, land theft, discrimination, and violence, this webinar will explore models of action towards achieving land justice and rematriation – and how extension professionals might engage themselves in support of these initiatives. Sogorea Te’ Land Trust will share strategies for land return, creating sites of urban cultivation and care. Minnow will discuss their work securing land tenure for farmers of color while simultaneously supporting Indigenous land sovereignty, and California FarmLink will describe their programs connecting Latinx, Southeast Asian and other farmers to land leasing, ownership and wealth building opportunities.
Panelists include:
• Corrina Gould, Lisjan Ohlone Matriarch, Tribal Spokesperson for the Confederated Villages of Lisjan, and Co-founder of Sogorea Te' Land Trust
• Neil Thapar (he/him), Co-Founder and Co-Director of Minnow
• Brett Melone, California FarmLink
