It’s difficult to pass Akdeniz Bakery in Stoke Newington without turning your head towards the large storefront window, enchanted by the sure-handed moves of a Turkish woman rolling out dough after dough, swiftly filling each, before baking it into a delicately soft flatbread on a traditional saç griddle. Yet, a great deal of passers-by, having caught a glimpse, move on, unaware of the flavours of perfect simplicity that they have decided to miss.
This place is a portal to Turkey. It’s tiny (it doesn’t even have an Instagram), but it knocks out freshly baked Turkish breads, sweet & savoury pastries and, of course, incredibly soft gözleme. Next time you pass, do pop in, take in the spectacle and grab a gözleme for a light lunch.
